A growing number of African countries now ask you to apply for entry permission online before you travel, even without a visa. Miss it and you can be turned away at boarding.

These passports need a 'referral visa', which has to be approved by the head of Tanzania's immigration service. You apply online, usually with an invitation letter from someone in Tanzania. It can take up to 2 months, so apply early and don't book flights until it's approved.

Good to know

Since 1 October 2026, visitors to mainland Tanzania must buy the government's travel insurance: USD 44 for adults and USD 22 for children aged 3 to 17. Buy it online at inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz before you fly, or when you arrive. You don't need it if you live in an East African Community or SADC country. Arriving in Zanzibar first? Buy Zanzibar's own insurance at inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz instead. One policy covers both.
