A growing number of African countries now ask you to apply for entry permission online before you travel, even without a visa. Miss it and you can be turned away at boarding.

Entering Libya

What each African passport needs.

Algeria, Mauritania, Tunisia
Algeria: Only if you fly into Mitiga airport in Tripoli or Misurata airport.
Mauritania: Only if you fly into Mitiga airport in Tripoli or Misurata airport. You may also be asked for a security letter from Libya's immigration authorities, so check with your airline before you fly.

Apply online before you travel. Tourists can't travel on their own: you need to book with a Libyan tour company, or be invited by a person or company in Libya who takes responsibility for you. You may also be asked to show 1,000 Libyan dinars in cash when you arrive.

Libya's online visa site doesn't accept South Sudanese passports. Ask a Libyan embassy.

Good to know

Egyptian women, and Egyptian men under 18 or over 45, can enter without a visa. Sudanese citizens find it hard to get a visa. Many governments advise their citizens not to travel to Libya.
