Do you need to apply before you fly?

A growing number of African countries now ask you to apply for entry permission online before you travel, even without a visa. Miss it and you can be turned away at boarding.

We track what each scheme actually asks for, so you can sort it out before you book, not after.

ECOWAS/AES free movement; status for non-ECOWAS/AES travellers not yet established

Citizens of the 12 remaining ECOWAS member states enter visa-free under the 1979 free movement protocol. After withdrawing from ECOWAS in January 2025, the Alliance of Sahel States (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger) declared itself a visa-free zone for all ECOWAS nationals in a December 2024 Bamako declaration, and this reciprocal arrangement was confirmed still in force through mid-2026. What non-ECOWAS/non-AES African travellers require has not been established for this country.

It's required for nothing for ECOWAS/AES citizens under the current reciprocal arrangement. Not established for other nationalities..

The fee is USD 0.

Good to know

Security conditions in the Sahel mean formal immigration policy may not reflect practical accessibility; this entry concerns documented policy only.

Still confirming: PRIORITY: establish what non-ECOWAS/non-AES African travellers require to enter Niger; Whether any online pre-travel step exists; Whether the AES-ECOWAS reciprocal visa-free arrangement has since been formalised into a treaty or remains an unwritten political declaration
