Today we are opening Ria's Colony School, a free place to learn the skills for the life you are becoming. You can start now at school.riascolony.org on your phone, tablet or laptop.
On day one there are 36 courses and more than 2,600 lessons across ten subjects, from personal branding and public speaking to marketing, public relations and AI. Every course is free, and there is nothing to pay later.
When you finish a full course, you take a final quiz. Pass it, and you get a certificate with your name on it. Each certificate has its own web page and code, so an employer or client can verify it in seconds.
This post explains why we built the school, every course you can take, how a course works from the first lesson to the certificate, and the rules we chose on purpose.
Why we built the school
Everyone is becoming someone: a leader, a founder, a speaker, a more confident version of themselves. We built the school to give everyone the skills to get there, and to be seen for who they are becoming.
A lot of those skills are rarely taught well. Think of presenting yourself with confidence, writing words that sell, handling the press, running an online community or using AI at work. When they are taught, it is often in expensive programmes. So most people learn them slowly, by trial and error.
We kept running into three problems.
Cost. Good courses often cost more than many people can pay, especially in a currency that is not the US dollar.
Screens and data. Many courses are built for a big screen and a fast connection. But most people we speak with learn on a phone, in short breaks, on the bus or before bed.
Proof. When you do finish a course, the certificate is usually just a picture. Anyone can make one. An employer has no easy way to know it is real.
The school is our answer to all three. It is free. It is built for the phone first. And anyone can verify a certificate, at any time.
Where the school fits in Ria's Colony
Ria's Colony works to make it easier to understand African countries, travel across the continent and do business in African markets. Part of that is learning. Our learning side is Style Vault, and the school is where its full courses now live.
- Style Vault is about personal style and image.
- Ria's Colony School holds the courses, the quizzes and the certificates.
- The Academy page on our main site introduces both.

How a course works, step by step
1. Sign up
Signing up asks for four things: your name, email, country and phone number. There is no password. Each time you sign in, we email you a short code. Type it in and you are in.
One account opens every course and every resource in the school.
2. Start a course
Pick a course and press start. From that moment, you have 14 days to finish it. The clock is there to keep you moving. Most people who start a course "whenever" never finish it.
You can take more than one course at a time. If you change your mind about a course, you can leave it from its page.
3. Work through the lessons
A course opens on its list of lessons. Tap a lesson and it opens on its own page, with the other lessons listed next to it on a computer and under it on a phone.
Lessons open one after the other. Finish one and press Mark as done, and the next one opens. That way you build each idea on the one before it.
A lesson can be:
- Slides: short slides, one idea at a time, with a progress bar at the top. Press Full screen and the slide fills the whole screen, which is easier to read on a phone.
- A video to watch.
- A file to download and keep.
Your progress is saved as you go. Close the page any time, and next time you open the course, the lessons you finished are ticked and the next one is waiting. Each lesson has its own address, named after its title, so you can bookmark it or send it to yourself. The phone's back button takes you back to the lesson list, as you would expect.
Take notes as you go. Press Notes in a lesson and a panel opens beside it. Write down what you want to remember. Notes save as you type, and you can see the notes for this lesson or for the whole course. You can keep up to 10 notes in total, across all your courses, so keep the ones that matter. All your notes are together on the My notes page in your profile, where you can delete old ones or export them as a PDF (up to 3 exports a day).
Take a short break. After about 20 minutes of reading, the school offers you a 5-minute break with a small game: find the pairs, remember the squares, or spot the odd one out. You can play or skip it. The games only show up after you have been reading, so they are a small reward, not a distraction.
4. If you run out of time
If 14 days pass before you finish, the course locks. You then have 7 more days to renew it for another 14 days, and you keep all your progress.
If you do not renew in those 7 days, the course resets. You can start it again from the first lesson.
5. Take the final quiz
When every lesson is done, the final quiz opens. Here is how it works:
- It has 50 questions, shown one at a time.
- You need 75% or more to pass. That is 38 right answers out of 50.
- Each course has a bank of about 150 questions, and you get 50 of them. So two students rarely get the same quiz.
- You get 2 tries, both on the same 50 questions, in a new order with the answers shuffled again.
- After each try you see your score, but not which answers were right. That keeps the questions fair for every student.
- If neither try passes, your lessons reset. Go through the course again, and then you get 2 new tries with a new set of questions.
Stay on the quiz page until you hand in. If you switch tabs, apps or windows, you get one warning. The second time, your try is handed in with the answers you have given so far. Closing or reloading the page hands it in too. The questions can't be copied, printed or saved, so give yourself enough time to finish in one sitting.
We made the quizzes hard on purpose. The questions cover the whole course, the wrong answers look believable, and many questions describe a real situation and ask what you would do. You cannot pass by clicking through the lessons. A certificate only means something if it was earned.
6. Get your certificate
The moment you pass, your certificate is ready. It shows your name, the course name and a unique code.
A certificate anyone can verify
A certificate is proof of how far you have come.
Every certificate has its own web page, with the certificate itself and a Verified certificate note. When you open your own certificate, you also get these buttons:
- Download PDF: one A4 page, saved with your name and the course name, ready to print or attach.
- Download PNG: the same certificate as a picture, also saved with your name and the course name.
- Copy link: paste it into your CV, a job application or a message to a client.
- Add to LinkedIn: add it to your LinkedIn profile.
Anyone can open the link, or type the code into Check a certificate, and see straight away who earned it and for which course.
Is it accredited? No, and we want to be clear about that. A school certificate shows that you finished our course and passed its quiz. It is not a university degree or a government qualification. What makes it useful is that it is honest and easy to check.
Once you pass a course, it stays open to you, so you can go back to the lessons whenever you need them. All your certificates are kept on the My certificates page in your profile.
Your dashboard
When you sign in, you land on your dashboard. It is the home for everything you are learning.
- Your numbers: courses, lessons done and certificates earned.
- A quote for the day, a new one each day.
- Pick up where you left off: the course you were last on, with how far you have got and what is next, like "3 lessons to go until the final quiz".
- Continue reading: the resources you are reading, with how far through each one you are.
- Courses on the go, with the days left to finish each one.
- Time's up on these: courses whose 14 days have ended, with a Renew button while you can still keep your progress.
- Try this today: one small thing to practise, linked to a course.
- More resources and courses to try next, picked from the subjects you are already learning.
Your profile holds your details, which you can change at any time, and links to three pages:
- My certificates: every certificate you have earned, ready to download or share.
- Finished resources: the guides you have read to the end, by month.
- My notes: all your lesson notes, by course.
Keep it on your phone like an app
You can add the school to your phone's home screen. It then opens full screen with its own icon, like an app, and there is nothing to download from an app store. Tap Get the app at the bottom of any page, or in the phone menu, and follow the steps for your phone.
Resources: guides to keep
Alongside the courses, the school has a Resources section. These are free guides, checklists and country guides, grouped into collections. Some examples:
- Your December Africa Trip: A Traveller's Checklist, to keep track of flights, visas, places to stay and bookings.
- Operator December Checklist, a month-by-month plan for hotels, short-lets, restaurants and venues.
- The Africa Story Project: Terms of Reference, for anyone applying to share their story with us.
Anyone can read a resource's page. To open the file itself, you need a school account, the same one you use for courses. Files open in a reader on the page, and it remembers which page you stopped on.
These resources used to live on the main Ria's Colony site. They have moved to the school so all our learning material is in one place.
Good to know
Is it really free? Yes. Every course in the school is free, and there is nothing to pay later.
Do I need a computer? No. The whole school is built to work on a phone first.
Can I take more than one course? Yes. Your dashboard keeps track of all of them.
Can I take notes? Yes. Every lesson has a Notes panel. You can keep up to 10 notes in total and export them as a PDF.
Is there an app? You can add the school to your phone's home screen with Get the app. It opens like an app, with no app store needed.
What if I fail the quiz? You get 2 tries on the same 50 questions. If neither passes, your lessons reset. Go through the course again and you get 2 new tries with a new set of questions.
What happens to my progress if I stop for a while? It is saved. Just come back before your 14 days end, or renew in the 7 days after.
How do I get help? Email support@riascolony.org and we will get back to you.
